LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy this week, with a PhD or PsyD therapist.

Whether you're working through identity, in a queer relationship, navigating a transition, or just dealing with the same things straight adults deal with, your first session can be this week. Every therapist holds a PhD or PsyD, and a real coordinator pairs you with the affirmative clinician who fits where you are on a five-minute call.

What we treat

LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy is what we do, and the rest of the team is here when the work asks for more

Six ways our doctoral team supports queer adults across identity, relationships, and the issues that don't have to do with being queer at all. Every clinician PhD or PsyD.

  • Affirmative individual therapy

Doctoral therapy for queer, trans, and non-binary adults. Identity is the focus when it should be, and not the focus when it shouldn't.

  • LGBTQ+ couples therapy

Affirmative couples work for same-sex, polyamorous, open, and any partnership that doesn't fit the default.

  • Trans and gender-affirming care

Doctoral support for clients exploring, transitioning, or post-transition.

  • Coming out and identity work

Whether you're exploring, just out, or 30 years out. Different stages need different work.

  • Anxiety, depression, and trauma

When queer adults come in for the same things straight adults do, with a clinician who gets the additional context.

  • Psychiatry on the same affirming team

Affirming psychiatrists when medication can help. One care plan, not two separate visits where you have to come out twice.

Why Williamsburg Therapy Group

Five reasons LGBTQ+ adults choose WTG over a solo affirming therapist

Where doctoral training meets actual affirming care across the full team.

  • You don't come out twice

Therapy, psychiatry, and couples work all on the same affirming team. Your story moves with your consent. No retelling, no re-disclosing, no starting over.

  • Only doctoral-level therapists

PhD and PsyD only, with documented LGBTQ+ affirmative training. Most practices stop at 'LGBTQ-friendly' as a filter checkbox. We don't.

  • Real coordinator match in 24 hours

Tell our coordinator what matters most in the match, clinician with experience working with trans clients, polyamorous relationships, religious deconstruction, intersectional identities. Our team is large enough to match specifically rather than generally.

  • Couples and family work on the same team

Same-sex, poly, open, chosen-family. Your relationships get the same affirmative doctoral standard.

  • Multi-clinician backup

Solo affirming practitioners book up. If your matched therapist is out, full, or eventually doesn't fit, we have a team on the same affirming standard. You're not stuck.

Common questions

Everything LGBTQ+ patients ask before the first session

How much does therapy cost, and how long will it take?
Sessions are $280 to $380 each. Most adults meet weekly to start, often shifting to every other week as the work progresses. Patients doing focused work often see meaningful change in 12 to 20 sessions. Patients doing deeper identity, relational, or trauma work may stay longer. Your therapist will set goals with you in the first sessions and check progress regularly. We're not in the business of keeping you in therapy forever.
How do I know your therapists are actually affirming?
Affirmative training is a documented part of our clinician development standard, not just a self-described filter. Our doctoral therapists complete continuing education in LGBTQ+ affirmative care, and our coordinator can tell you specifically what training a particular therapist has done. You're also welcome to ask the therapist directly in your first session. Affirmative therapists welcome that question.
How will I know if my therapist understands my specific experience?
Tell your coordinator what matters most in the match, whether that's a clinician with experience working with trans clients specifically, with polyamorous relationships, with religious deconstruction, with intersectional identities, or any other lens. Our team is large enough to match you specifically rather than generally.
Can you write letters for gender-affirming care?
Some of our clinicians write letters for gender-affirming medical care when clinically appropriate, and your coordinator can match you specifically with a clinician who does. If letter-writing is a key part of why you're reaching out, mention it during your first call so we pair you correctly.
Do you take my insurance for LGBTQ+ therapy?
We're a cash-pay practice, so we don't bill insurance directly. Most patients use out-of-network benefits and get reimbursed 50 to 80 percent of the session fee. We give you a superbill and partner with Reimbursify, a claim-filing service, that submits it to your insurer for you.
